For the second time in three years, the Montréal Carabins have knocked off the UBC Thunderbirds in the national quarterfinals, earning a dramatic 4-3 shootout victory over the top seed on Friday at the 2026 Miller Waste U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship.
The No. 8-seeded Carabins opened the scoring in the second period when Janelle Mentor found the back of the net, and after UBC answered on a power play goal from Grace Elliott, Montréal regained the lead in the final second of the frame on a shorthanded marker from Chloe Duchesneau.
UBC pushed back in the third, with Jaylyn Morris scoring to tie the game at 3:48 of the period. Then a Montréal own goal, credited to UBC's Karine Sandilands, four minutes later gave the Canada West champions their first lead of the game. But Montréal responded midway through the period, as Juliette Rolland scored to tie the game at 3-3.
After a scoreless 10-minute overtime period, the game went to a shootout, where Audrey-Anne Veillette and Jade Picard scored for Montréal, while UBC's Sandilands was the only T-Bird scorer, sealing the Carabin upset victory.
Goaltender Maude Desroches was outstanding for Montréal, turning aside 31 shots through regulation and overtime and backstopping her team in the shootout. UBC’s Elise Hugens made 19 saves in the loss.
Montréal, now 16-12-2 (13-9-2 RSEQ), advances to the national semifinal on Saturday at 7 p.m. against either UNB or Ottawa, while the Thunderbirds — who are now 31-2-1 (26-2-0 CW) — head to a consolation game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
