Gingera leads UBC past Queen’s in national quarterfinal
Reeve Gingera recorded 15 kills and added two service aces as the UBC Thunderbirds rallied to defeat the Queen’s Gaels 3-1 (19-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-20) in the second quarterfinal of the 2026 BioSteel U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championship on Friday at the Toldo Lancer Centre.
With the win, UBC improved to 23-2 (19-1 Canada West) and advanced to Saturday’s first national semifinal, where the Thunderbirds will face the Manitoba Bisons at 6 p.m. Queen’s, now 17-7 (14-6 OUA), moves to the consolation bracket and will take on the Laval Rouge et Or at noon.
Gingera, named UBC’s player of the game, delivered a steady offensive performance for the Thunderbirds, hitting .345 while contributing four digs and a block. Setter Mason Greves orchestrated the offence with 41 assists as UBC finished the match with a .267 hitting percentage and 48 kills.
Dawson Pratt added 13 kills and 10 digs for UBC, while Alex Emery was nearly flawless offensively with seven kills on seven attempts.
Queen’s opened the match strongly, taking the first set 25-19 behind efficient attacking and a pair of late kills from Nikola Mitrovic. The Gaels hit .429 in the opening frame and capitalized on several UBC errors to seize early momentum.
The Thunderbirds responded in the second set, tightening their defence and finding rhythm through Gingera and Pratt. UBC gradually pulled away late in the frame to level the match before carrying that momentum into the third set, where they built a commanding lead and closed it out 25-17.
UBC maintained control in the fourth set, using a balanced attack and strong blocking to keep Queen’s at bay.
Mitrovic, Queen’s player of the game, led the Gaels with 14 kills, while Reed Venning added 10. However, Queen’s hit just .200 as a team and struggled to sustain offensive pressure after the opening set.
A crowd of 964 attended the afternoon match at the Toldo Lancer Centre.
