Laval tops Queen’s to stay alive at U SPORTS championship
Félix-Antoine Perron and Thomas Boccardi each recorded 12 kills as the Laval Rouge et Or defeated the Queen’s Gaels 3-1 (25-16, 15-25, 25-17, 25-18) in the first consolation match of the 2026 BioSteel U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championship on Saturday at the Toldo Lancer Centre.
The victory keeps Laval’s tournament hopes alive, sending the Rouge et Or into Sunday’s fifth-place match at noon. Queen’s sees its season come to an end with the loss.
Charles St-Aubin, named Laval’s player of the game, directed the offence with 32 assists while contributing six digs, two service aces and five block assists in a steady all-around performance.
Perron added three service aces and six digs to his 12-kill effort, while Boccardi also finished with 12 kills and two aces as Laval produced seven service aces and 12 team blocks in the match.
The Rouge et Or came out strong, taking the opening set 25-16 behind an efficient attack that forced Queen’s into several early errors. The Gaels responded in the second set, tightening their defence and hitting .364 as a team to level the match with a 25-15 win.
From there, Laval regained control. The Rouge et Or built early leads in both the third and fourth sets, using their serving pressure and blocking to limit Queen’s offensive rhythm. Laval closed out the match with a 25-18 victory in the fourth set.
Reed Venning earned player-of-the-game honours for Queen’s, leading the Gaels with 11 kills and two blocks. Alex Brdarevic added eight kills, while Ben Carr chipped in seven for Queen’s.
With the win, Laval improves to 16-6 overall (11-5 RSEQ) and advances to Sunday’s fifth-place match, while Queen’s finishes its season with a 17-8 record (14-6 OUA) following the consolation-round defeat in Windsor.
