1988 Vanier Cup Game Recap
1988 – Calgary 52 Saint Mary's 23
With Saint Mary’s #1 quarterback declared medically unfit to play, Bill Scollard, the Huskies top wide receiver was pressed into action as a replacement for Hec Crighton trophy winner, Chris Flynn.
For 52 minutes Scollard, who completed 27 of 47 attempts (a Vanier Cup record), kept the Huskies in the game against the University of Calgary Dinosaurs. The Cinderella finish was not to be however. With eight minutes left to play the Huskies, who appeared to have gained the momentum and were moving down field to attempt to tie the game had their hopes dashed when Dave Heaton of the Dinosaurs grabbed an interception and took it 75 yards for a Calgary touchdown and a 38- 23 lead.
Momentum switched to the Dinos who went on to add two more touchdowns for a 52-23 victory and their third Vanier Cup victory in six years. This marked the last Vanier Cup played at Varsity Stadium.
13 Vanier Cup records were broken or tied, the 75 points scored being the highest total to date.
