Acadia 2, Memorial 0 Final

On Sunday both Acadia and Memorial battled damp conditions lakeside at King George as they competed in AUS women's soccer action. In the early stages the ball was mostly found in the midfield.

Midway through the first half in the 18th minute Sea~Hawk veteran forward Alex White-Dzuro was forced to leave the game after a collision opened a cut on her head that required stitches.

In the 24th minute Memorial had a great opportunity to get ahead when Morris put up an exceptional cross to teammate Heather Williams. Williams took the cross and put a nice shot on goal that was turned away by Acadia's keeper Leisha Doyle.

It was the Axewomen who would strike first as in the 30th minute as Reid would score for the second time on the weekend.

In the 55th minute Memorial's Williams made a strong run but met resistance inside the box from the Acadia defense. The home crowd felt a penalty kick was warranted but the referee had a good look at the play and felt it was good, clean defense by Acadia.

In the 76th Acadia extended their lead with Elizabeth Leighton's shot was deflected by Memorial keeper Simone Quinlan into the feet of Dyana Rayner who tipped it over the goalline to make it 2-0 for the visitors.

Quinlan tried to rally the home side with a big save on a penalty kick but it was not enough as the final was 2-0.

The Sea~Hawks fell to 0-3-1 on the season, making this weekend's three game road trip huge for their playoff hopes.

Reid was the HITS FM Player of the Game for the winners.

Coach Mavin was very pleased with the way the women's side played in the first game, specifically in the second half. He said, "There was great communication which further led to good ball movement and improvements on possession and scoring chances. On Sunday we started very slowly but played better in the second half. We have an important week of practice coming up."

Queen's 4, Laurentian 0 Final

KINGSTON, Ont. (September 26, 2010) – Brienna Shaw of Vancouver, B.C., scored two first half goals to lead the No. 7 Queen's Gaels to a 4-0 victory over the Laurentian Lady Vees at Richardson Stadium Sunday afternoon .

Shaw scored the Gaels first goal as she converted a penalty kick midway through the first half. Shaw would score her second goal in the final minutes of the half to give the Gaels a two goal lead at halftime.

Jennifer Hutchison of St. John's, Nfld., was able to put one past the keeper in a scramble in front of the net early in the second half to increase the Gaels' lead to three. Jacqueline Tessier of Winnipeg, Man., scored on an open net to round out the scoring.

Tessier has scored at least one goal in six of the eight regular season games this year. Tessier's goal brings her regular season total to 13 as she continues to lead the CIS in scoring.

Chantel Marson of London, Ont., played the first half in net while Elena Corry of Hamilton, Ont., played the second half to share the shutout.

The win brings the Gaels' regular season record to 7-1 as they continue to lead the OUA East standings.

Ottawa 1, Ryerson 0 Final

TORONTO - Scoring an own goal, the Ryerson women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees Sunday afternoon at Allan Lamport Stadium. The Rams (1-2-4) limited the chances of the CIS No. 9 ranked Gee-Gees (5-1-1), but the mental error and a lack of shots cost Ryerson the three points.

"They capitalized on our mistake," said Rams Head Coach Ramin Mohammadi. "The good players they had, we shut them down and they didn't do anything. A tie game (would have been) fair, but in the end the scoreboard shows who is losing."

The goal was credited to Ottawa defender Gillian Baggott, but aside from that, keeper Stefanie Webster played a solid game, saving several high shots from in close.

Ryerson defender Julia Rao also blocked an early shot on a partial breakaway, extending her leg to deflect the early scoring chance.

"No team has been able to break our defence yet," Mohammadi said, citing his team's tight defensive play.

Physicality intensified the game, as the Rams forwards were routinely being shoved, and knocked down by a strong Gee-Gee's squad. Diana Smiciklas and Kendra Welham both left the field at different points, with Smiciklas returning. According to the team, they will both be ready for the next game.

While the whistle was left in the pocket for most of the match, striker Calaigh Copland was issued her third yellow card of the season, and will miss the Rams next contest.

"It was a stupid, heat of the moment thing," Copland said, "They were doing a lot of obstruction, the ref didn't even notice and that's where my elbow came from."

Ottawa's Corina Jarrett was issued a late-game yellow as well.

The loss drops the Rams to seventh place, one point behind Carleton, two behind Nipissing and five back of Laurentian.

First-year right-winger Shannon Cosgrove did not play; still sidelined by a concussion sustained against Toronto on Sept. 19.

Western 2, Guelph 0 Final

LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs found the back of the net with two quick goals late in the second half to beat the Guelph Gryphons 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at TD Waterhouse Stadium.

Courtney Stocks (North York, Ont.) and Erin Grand (Toronto) scored for the Mustangs. Melanie Oberholzer, of Kitchener, Ont., got the shutout in net for the Mustangs making eight saves. It was her third shutout of the week.

The first half was an even battle between the two teams, with a number of scoring chances for each side. The Mustangs upped the offensive pressure in the second half as evidenced by the five corners they won.

Western was able to break the scoreless draw when a cross found Ginger Basnett (London, Ont.) in the box, her shot went off Guelph goalie Joelle Chartrain right to Stocks who hammered it into the back of the net to make it 1-0 in the 72nd minute.

The Mustangs did not sit back on their lead and quickly made it 2-0 in the 75th minute off of an excellent individual effort by Grand. Solid goaltending by Oberholzer closed out the game to earn herself the shutout.

McMaster 1, Windsor 0 Final

WINDSOR, Ont. - The Windsor Lancer women's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season this weekend with a 1-0 loss to the McMaster Marauders on Sunday afternoon.

Prior to the loss, the Lancers drew a 1-1 tie with the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday.

Against Guelph, the Gryphons took a one goal lead early in the second half. Striker Kristin Southgate took advantage of unmarked territory in the Lancer 18-yard box after the Windsor defence had over-committed.

Southgate came face-to-face with Lancer goaltender Rebecca Singer, and was able to slip the ball into the bottom corner of the net behind Singer.

With the game drawing to a close, Windsor rallied in the final minute of play to tie the game at one. Mereasa Brownlie jumped on a loose rebound from a Windsor throw in the Guelph box and forced a nice ball into the Guelph net for the goal.

Both teams had plenty of opportunities to put their teams on the board, but strong play from both goaltenders kept the game close. Singer made 3 solid saves for the Lancers, while Guelph's Harriet Melvin made eight for the visiting squad.

On Sunday, the Marauders' Tara Dawdy was able to take advantage of a direct free kick at the top of the 18-yard box in the second half to earn the win.

Throughout the game, the Marauders showed signs of strong possession and managed to generate seven shots on net. Singer played strong in net for the Lancers, but was unable to stop the free kick that soared above her head into the top right corner.

Windsor had a number of notable chances to get on the board in the first half with Heather Daichedt managing to dribble past the MAC defence, but was unable to convert.

Brownlie and Candace Garrod also registered a few shots a piece on net. Lancer goaltender Singer was busy in net, recording seven saves in net.
