Lauren Carter scored the lone goal in regulation and the University of New Brunswick prevailed in a shootout to defeat the Ottawa Gee-Gees 2-1 (SO) in the fourth quarterfinal of the 2026 U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship on Friday at the Woolwich Memorial Centre.
Ottawa struck early, opening the scoring just 55 seconds into the game when Alex Ferguson capitalized on a power play, beating UNB netminder Cassie McCallum to give the Gee-Gees a 1-0 lead.
UNB responded midway through the first period, as Carter scored shorthanded at 12:33 to even the game at 1-1. The goal would stand as the last of regulation, as both teams tightened defensively and relied heavily on their goaltenders the rest of the way.
McCallum and Ottawa’s Clara Grenier were outstanding throughout, with Grenier turning aside 43 shots and McCallum stopping 28. Ottawa was outshot 44-29, but remained in the game thanks to Grenier’s steady presence between the pipes.
After a scoreless overtime solved nothing, the game moved to a shootout where UNB found the edge. Katelyn Scott and Payton Hargreaves each scored for the Reds, while Ottawa managed just one successful attempt, sealing the victory for UNB.
Grenier earned Ottawa’s player of the game honours with a stellar performance despite the loss, while McCallum was named UNB’s player of the game after backstopping her team to the win.
With the victory, UNB advances to play the Montréal Carabins in a national semifinal on Saturday at 7 p.m., while Ottawa moves to the consolation bracket and will play UBC at 1 p.m.
