Ashton Thorpe scored the winner and the UBC Thunderbirds turned in a composed two-way effort to defeat the Ottawa Gee-Gees 2-0 in the second consolation game of the 2026 Miller Waste U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship on Saturday at the Woolwich Memorial Centre.
Both teams entered the contest looking to rebound from heartbreaking shootout losses in Friday’s quarterfinals, and it was UBC that dictated the pace early, outshooting Ottawa 15-6 in a scoreless opening period.
The breakthrough came late in the second period on the power play, as Thorpe wired a shot past Ottawa netminder Clara Génier at 15:10 to give the Thunderbirds a 1-0 lead. Génier, named Ottawa’s player of the game, was stellar throughout, turning aside 37 shots and keeping the Gee-Gees within striking distance.
UBC continued to press in the third, and Jacquelyn Fleming sealed the result with an even-strength goal with 25 seconds remaining, capitalizing on an empty-net situation to make it 2-0.
Elise Hugens was perfect in goal for the Thunderbirds, stopping all 15 shots she faced for the shutout, while UBC finished with a commanding 39-15 advantage in shots.
With the win, UBC improves to 31-2-1 (26-2 Canada West) and advances to Sunday’s fifth-place game, where they will face the host Waterloo Warriors at 8 a.m. Ottawa, meanwhile, sees its season come to an end with a 19-12-2 record (15-9-2 OUA).
