History was made for the University of New Brunswick on Sunday morning.
Katelyn Scott scored the opening goal and was named player of the game as the AUS champions skated to a 2-1 victory over the Guelph Gryphons to capture the bronze medal — the first national medal in program history — at the 2026 U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship at the Woolwich Memorial Centre.
UNB struck early and never trailed. Scott opened the scoring just 2:35 into the contest, finishing off a strong start that saw the Atlantic champions dictate the pace in the opening minutes.
Guelph responded midway through the period, as Katherine Heard found the back of the net shorthanded at 10:02 to even the score at 1-1. But UNB regained the lead less than a minute later when Avery Thurston converted at 11:01, a goal that would stand as the game-winner.
From there, the game tightened defensively. UNB goaltender Cassie McCallum was steady throughout, turning aside 28 shots, including 22 over the final two periods, as the Gryphons pushed for the equalizer.
Maeve Sutherland-Case, named Guelph’s player of the game, was among the Gryphons’ most dangerous forwards, generating multiple chances as part of a persistent third-period push.
Guelph outshot UNB 29-18, but was unable to solve McCallum again, as the AUS champions held firm to secure the program’s milestone victory.
The bronze medal marks a significant breakthrough for UNB, whose four previous trips to the national championship produced a fourth-place finish in 2022 and three consecutive seventh place showing.
UNB closes its season with a 27-8-2 record (20-6-2 AUS), while Guelph finishes at 25-7-3 (19-4-3 OUA), placing fourth nationally for the third time in program history (1998, 2016, 2026).
