The host Waterloo Warriors are heading to the U SPORTS women's hockey championship final after a 5-1 semifinal victory over the Concordia Stingers on Saturday at the Woolwich Memorial Centre.
Gracey Smith opened the scoring for Waterloo (28-6-6) in the final seconds of the first period, converting a setup from Carly Orth and Kassidy McCarthy. Brodi Levitt doubled the lead at 16:12 of the second, assisted by McCarthy and Lyndsy Acheson.
Concordia (29-5-0) clawed back in the third when Alexandra-Anne Boyer struck at 8:41, but the Warriors responded with three unanswered goals. McCarthy restored the two-goal lead at 14:45, Levitt added an empty-netter at 16:54, and Madison Pritchard sealed the win with another empty-net goal at 19:27.
Waterloo goaltender Kara Mark stopped 26 shots for the victory, while Concordia's Jordyn Verbeek made 27 saves in the loss. The Warriors outshot the Stingers 32-27.
With the win, Waterloo advances to Sunday's championship game at 6 p.m. in search of its first national title. Concordia will play for bronze at 2 p.m.
