Leah Herrfort had a goal and an assist as the No. 8 seed Waterloo Warriors upset the top-seeded Alberta Pandas, 3-0, in the second quarterfinal of the 2025 Miller Waste U SPORTS Women's Hockey Championship at the Woolwich Memorial Centre. Herrfort got the tournament hosts on the board at 14:38 of the first period, to the delight of most the 1,084 fans assembled.
The Warriors added to their lead on a goal by Kassidy McCarthy at 3:10 into the second period and Gracey Smith closed out the scoring with a snap shot that flew past Alberta goalie Grace Glover. Carly Orth was the other multi-point scorer for Waterloo, as she finished with two assists.
The Pandas, for their part, took 22 shots on goal and had seven power-play opportunities but could not find a way past Kara Mark and the Warriors' tight defence.
Mark made 22 saves to pick up the shutout, the first for the Warriors at a U SPORTS championship. Glover had 17 saves in a losing cause.
Abby Soyko was named the player of the game for the Pandas, as she had a team-high seven shots on goal. Herrfort took the honours for Waterloo.
With the win, Waterloo advances to Saturday's first semifinal, where they will play the No. 4 seed Concordia Stingers at 4 p.m. Alberta will play STFX in a consolation game on Saturday at 10 a.m.
