The UBC Thunderbirds avenged their Canada West final loss with a 5-1 victory over the Alberta Pandas in the fifth-place game at the 2025 Miller Waste U SPORTS Women's Hockey Championship on Sunday.
Mackenzie Kordic led the way for UBC (31-5-1) with two goals and an assist, including the eventual game-winner at 11:49 of the second period. Jacquelyn Fleming opened the scoring at 7:49 of the first, while Makenzie McCallum and Grace Elliott added second- and third-period markers, respectively.
Alberta (32-9-1) got its lone goal on a power play early in the third, with Natalie Kieser converting at 1:41. Despite the effort, the Pandas were unable to replicate their Canada West championship victory over UBC, struggling to generate chances against a well-structured Thunderbirds defense.
Elise Hugens made 20 saves for UBC in the win, while Alberta's Grace Glover and Mackenzie Dojahn combined for 31 saves in the loss. The Thunderbirds outshot the Pandas 36-21 and controlled the faceoff circle, winning 39 draws to Alberta's 32.
With the win, UBC finishes fifth at nationals, matching their finish at the 2024 event.
