Spartans top host Lancers to reach national final
Kaden Schmidt recorded a match-high 24 kills to lead the Trinity Western Spartans to a 3-1 semifinal victory (25-21, 25-15, 25-27, 25-22) over the host Windsor Lancers on Saturday night at the 2026 BioSteel U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championship at the Toldo Lancer Centre.
With the win, Trinity Western advances to Sunday’s gold-medal match at 6 p.m., while Windsor will play for the bronze medal at 3 p.m.
The Spartans established control early, using a balanced attack and strong serving pressure to capture the opening two sets. Trinity Western hit efficiently in the first frame, while Schmidt and Piers De Greeff consistently found openings against the Windsor block to help the Canada West champions build momentum.
Setter Anselm Rein, named Trinity Western’s player of the game, directed the offence with 44 assists while also contributing two kills, two service aces and seven digs in a steady all-around performance.
Windsor responded in the third set with the home crowd behind them. The Lancers battled through a tightly contested frame that featured multiple late ties before finally edging the Spartans 27-25 to extend the match.
Gustavo Siqueira led the Windsor attack with 13 kills and was named the Lancers’ player of the game. Darian Koskie added seven kills and four block assists, while Conaire Taub chipped in nine kills in the losing effort.
Trinity Western regained control in the fourth set, pulling ahead midway through the frame behind strong play from Schmidt and De Greeff. The Spartans maintained the advantage down the stretch before closing out the match 25-22 to secure their place in the national final.
De Greeff finished with 15 kills and six service aces for Trinity Western, while Cory Schoenherr added seven kills and three blocks as the Spartans hit .291 as a team.
Trinity Western (24-3, 17-3 CW) will face UBC in the national championship match Sunday at 6 p.m., while Windsor (21-5, 18-2 OUA) will play Manitoba for the bronze medal at 3 p.m.
