Laval outlasts Montréal in five sets to claim fifth place
Félix-Antoine Perron delivered a dominant offensive performance with 25 kills as the Laval Rouge et Or defeated the Montréal Carabins 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 25-23, 14-25, 17-15) to finish fifth at the 2026 BioSteel U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championship on Sunday at the Toldo Lancer Centre.
Perron, named Laval’s player of the match, added nine digs and two block assists while hitting .353 to lead the Rouge et Or through a tightly contested five-set battle. His final tally of 27 points tied Montréal’s Hugo Considère for the game high.
The opening set belonged to Laval, which used balanced scoring from Perron, Terell Tchouassi and Thomas Boccardi to pull away late for a 25-19 win. Montréal responded in the second set behind Considère’s powerful attacks from the left side, evening the match with a 25-21 victory.
Laval regained the lead in a tense third set. Perron’s consistent scoring helped the Rouge et Or edge ahead late before sealing a 25-23 decision to move within a set of the win.
The Carabins answered emphatically in the fourth. Montréal’s block came alive and Considère continued to find openings in the Laval defence as the RSEQ rivals forced a deciding set with a commanding 25-14 win.
The fifth set proved to be a back-and-forth affair. Montréal erased an early deficit and pushed the set deep into extra points before Laval finally prevailed 17-15, securing the program’s fifth-place finish.
Tchouassi contributed 18 kills for Laval, while Boccardi added 13. Setter Olivier Boulay orchestrated the offence with 44 assists.
Considère, Montréal’s player of the match, recorded 24 kills while hitting 0.400 and chipped in six digs and four block assists. Simon Coulet added 11 kills and Antoine Cazabon had nine for the Carabins.
With the victory, Laval closes the tournament in fifth place, while Montréal finishes sixth following the five-set thriller played in front of 713 spectators.
