Source: Memorial Athletics Sports Information St. John's N.L. - The Dalhousie Tigers ended the Memorial Sea-Hawks AUS men's volleyball season with a 3-0 win on Sunday in St. John's. Set scores were 25-20, 25-22 and 27-25. While the first placed Dalhousie Tigers took the second game of the weekend in three straight sets, the Sea-Hawks continued to show a valiant effort. The second set saw both teams within two points of each other the entire way. Once tied at 22 points, the Tigers pulled ahead by three points when it really counted. The last set was again, neck and neck, but two back-to-back errors from the Sea-Hawks and a kill by Dalhousie's Justin Lynch (Mt. Uniackie, N.S.) took the set 27-25. The Subway AUS player of the game was fourth year outside hitter Alexander Dempsey (Halifax, N.S.). Dempsey had 11 kills in the win and three service aces. Senior Bryan Duquette (St. Thomas, O.N.) added 10 kills and 11 digs for the Tigers. Left side Sam Burt (Waverley, N.S.) led the Sea-Hawks with 11 kills. The six-foot-eight Cody Harvey (Logy Bay, N.L.) provided seven kills, and three solo blocks in the loss. Memorial fifth year's Brad Jolliffe and Kendal Schmidt played their last games as Sea-Hawks. The team finished the season winless with a record of 0-17. Dalhousie improved their record to 14-1 with the win, clinching them a first round bye for the playoffs. |

Source: Bill Malley, McMaster Communications The McMaster men's volleyball team ran its conference win streak to 15, with a 3-0 decision over the visiting Nipissing Lakers Sunday afternoon in Hamilton. McMaster got off to a fast start in the opening set grabbing a 10-4 advantage and leading 16-8 at the technical timeout. That's when the Lakers made a move, closing to within18-15 with the momentum. But from that point, McMaster stepped on the gas and closed out a 25-18 decision to grab the early lead in the match. The second set saw the Marauders jump out 3-1, forcing Nipissing coach Eric Yung into a quick timeout as he wanted to avoid another early deficit. His team responded and the Lakers played even with the Marauders for the rest of the set. Mac led 16-13 at the technical break and despite the opposition efforts, was able to keep pushing forward against a game Nipissing squad for a 25-22 set win to go ahead by two sets. Looking to sweep the Lakers, McMaster got off to another fast start and Coach Yung had to call another early timeout with his team trailing 6-3. Perhaps viewing the tough task of coming back on the top-ranked team in Canada, the Lakers were unable to muster much resistance for the rest of the set. Down 16-7 at the technical timeout, the Marauders maintained the pressure and won 25-12 to end the match. McMaster had a very balanced attack on the day with Jori Mantha leading the way with 10 kills. Mac setter Austin Campion-Smith had 34 assists and kept the Laker defense guessing all afternoon. The Marauders next match is on Thursday, January 29 when the Maroon & Grey will host the Guelph Gryphons as part of a doubleheader. The women's match starts at 6 p.m., followed by men's action at 8 o'clock. |
