The host Ontario Tech Ridgebacks defeated the UNB Reds 2-1 in the second consolation semifinal of the 2024 Bruce Power U SPORTS Men's Soccer Championship on Friday at Vaso’s Field. The Ridgebacks improved to 10-1-3, while UNB fell to 6-4-3.
UNB took an early lead in the 25th minute when Ehab Moustafa scored with an assist from Stefano D’Ambrogio, striking the ball into the net after a clever play. However, the Ridgebacks responded in the second half, gaining momentum with a goal from Erion Metaj in the 65th minute, courtesy of a header from Alex Maadanian’s corner.
The intensity ramped up before Kairo Coore scored the game-winner in the 85th minute, finishing from close range after a scramble in the box.
The match also featured a robust defensive performance from both squads as both teams worked hard to fend off attacks. Ontario Tech’s goalkeeper Kevon Grant making four saves, while UNB’s Mahmoud Moustafa recorded three.
Ontario Tech advances to Saturday’s fifth-place game, where they will take on the STFX X-Men.
