Ryerson 3, Trent 0 Final
Despite several scoring chances and some questionable calls, the Trent Excalibur men’s soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to the Ryerson Rams in front of 200 fans at Justin Chiu Stadium on Wednesday.
Ryerson’s Victor Anastasov opened the scoring in the 15th minute on a questionable play. As the ball was played through, the Ryerson striker appeared to be offside, but play continued and Anastasov notched his 12th goal of the season.
Moments later, the Excalibur thought they had a chance as they were on the offensive when it appeared as though a Rams defender was guilty of a hand ball in the box. The play went unnoticed and the Excalibur were denied a penalty kick.
Trent was awarded a penalty kick in the 39th minute when striker Eli Adansi was hauled down in the penalty area. Adansi took the kick for Trent and his shot was sailing toward the corner of the goal, when Ryerson keeper Aaryon Gaeeni dove across the net to deny the opportunity and keep it a 1-0 game at halftime.
Adansi had another chance early in the second half as he headed a ball from a corner kick, but again Gaeeni was up to the task.
In the 50th minute, Ryerson extended their lead when a free kick by Armin Tankovic deflected off the Trent wall, beating Excalibur goalkeeper Brett Bennett. The Rams tacked on a third goal when Michael Jan played a ball toward the Trent goal from near mid-field and Bennett lost his footing on the wet grass and had the ball bounce out of his reach.
Bennett, a native of Monash, Australia, made eight saves in just his second appearance of the season. Gaeeni earned the shutout by stopping 6 Trent shots.
The Excalibur wrap up the home portion of their schedule on October 14 at 3 pm. They will host the Toronto Varsity Blues before finishing out their season on the road against Carleton on October 15.
