SASKATOON (CIS) – Canada West MVP Steve Bilan threw four
touchdown passes in his first playoff game of the season to lead
the Saskatchewan Huskies to a 31-16 win over the Saint Mary’s
Huskies in the Mitchell Bowl game.
The Green Huskies (9-2) advance to the 2004 Desjardins Vanier Cup
where they will meet the defending champion Laval Rouge et Or
(10-1), next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton
(live TSN & RDS). The two teams have met once in history, Laval
claiming a 27-21 decision in the 1999 Churchill Bowl in Quebec City
on its way to its first national title.
The three-time Vanier Cup champion Huskies advance to the CIS final
for the first time since 2002, when they lost 33-21 to Saint
Mary’s. Saskatchewan last captured the Vanier Cup in 1998,
defeating Concordia 24-17.
Bilan, back from a two-week absence due to an injury, completed 20
of 34 passes for 254 yards and one interception. Jeff Piercy caught
five passes for 59 yards and two majors, while Chad Nunweiler led
the rushing attack with 165 yards on 26 carries.
With Saskatchewan leading 17-13 after three quarters, Rodrigo
Davalos brought Saint Mary’s back to within one point booting
a 16-yard field goal, his third of the afternoon, 1:40 into the
final frame.
Bilan found Jeff Piercy in the end zone from 12 yards out five
minutes later to put the score at 24-16, and sealed the victory
with a 13-yard TD toss to Grame Bell with 4:01 left in the
contest.
Bilan’s first two passing majors went to Piercy, a seven-yard
throw which opened the scoring 4:25 into the game, and to Jeff
Schieman late in the third quarter.
For Saint Mary’s, Atlantic conference MVP Steve Panella was
10-of-20 for 211 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He
reached Olaf Tomiuk in the end zone from five yards out with 18
seconds left in the first half to tie the game at 10-10 going into
the locker room.
Les Mullings led the rushing attack for the 2003 Vanier Cup
finalists with 69 yards on 14 carries. After rushng for 301 yards
and two touchdowns a week ago in the Jewett Trophy final, Al
Giacalone was held to 33 yards on nine carries.

---------------------------------
Jeff Piercy a capté cinq
