(WOLFVILLE, N.S.) – A blocked field goal with less than five seconds remaining in the game denied the Acadia Axemen their second win of the season as the Mount Allison Mounties stole another Homecoming win from the host Axemen.
With the 15-13 win, Mount Allison improves to 2-4 on the season.
The Axemen jumped on the board at 5:14 in the first quarter with a safety given up by the Mounties followed by a 26-yard field goal by Brandon Jennings (St. Albert, Alta.) to give Acadia a 5-0 lead.
Jennings and Mountie Ryan Lambert (Grimsby, Ont.) exchanged 26 and 38-yard field goals respectively in the closing minutes of the second quarter to end the first half at 8-3 for the Axemen.
The first and only touchdown of the game came from a nine-play, 70-yard drive that was capped by a Jakob Loucks (Cornwall, Ont.) 13-yard toss to Subway Player of the Game Dakota Brush (Brantford, Ont.), giving the Mounties a 10-8 advantage.
The remaining third quarter scoring came from another Acadia safety and 40-yard field goal from Jennings.
Mount Allison added a team safety along with a 40-yard field goal by Lambert to hold onto a 15-13 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation time.
Driving the field 49 yards on five plays with just under a minute remaining, the Axemen were unable to take away a win after a 34-yard field goal attempt by Jennings was blocked.
Both teams were statistically close with Acadia's 334 net yards of offence compared to the Mounties' 323 yards.
Acadia's Subway Player of the Game, Cody Cluett (Cole Harbour, N.S.) was 21 for 45 pass attempts, posting a game-high 242 yards of passing, while Mountie Jakob Loucks posted an efficient 18 receptions on 28 attempts for 192 yards.
Brush had a game-high 109 yards receiving on eight receptions while Axemen Bradley Vince (Cambridge, Ont.) pulled in three receptions for 65 yards. Veteran Acadia receiver Eli Prochnau (Cochrane, Alta.) had five receptions for 63 yards.
The ground game was led by the Mounties' Chris Reid (Brampton, Ont.) who ran 18 times for 83 yards, while rookie Acadia running back Daniel Obiang (Ottawa, Ont.) posted a personal season high of 79 yards on 16 hard fought carries.
The Mounties improve to 2-4 while the Axemen hope wins in the remaining two regular season games will improve their 1-5 record. Acadia hosts the first-place StFX X-Men next Saturday at 2 p.m., while the Mounties host Saint Mary's in Sackville, N.B.

WATERLOO, Ont. (October 14, 2016) – Wilfrid Laurier running back Levondre Gordon rushed for 193 yards and a touchdown to help lead the No. 7 Golden Hawks to a 27-25 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Friday afternoon at University Stadium.
Hosting their first School Day Game in front of 4652 fans, the Hawks raced out to a 24-6 lead before holding off the Gryphons late rally to knock off Guelph for the first time in five years and in the process, post their sixth win of the season, their most since 2009.
“Like we said to the guys all week, they’re [Guelph] not a four-loss football team and they showed that today,” said head coach Michael Faulds after the victory. “They took us right down to the wire but I’m proud of how our guys battled. Leading 24-6, we would like to put them away but in the end, we made enough plays to get the win.”
“They’re a really good team,” added Gordon, echoing his coach’s comments. “But our offensive line pretty much got it done. They really opened the gaps for all the running backs, including myself. By opening it and spacing it out, that allowed us to have success and establish our passing game.”
Although the Hawks had 20 fewer offensive plays on the afternoon, Laurier was effective in converting a number of big yardage plays to gain control of the contest early. Gordon started proceedings just five minutes into the contest as he broke a 71-yard run for a touchdown to give Laurier a 7-0 lead.

SHERBROOKE, Que. – Three touchdown passes by Frédéric Paquette-Perrault led the McGill Redmen to a 37-14 win over the Bishop's Gaiters in CIS football action before 535 fans at a cool, dark Coulter Field on Friday night.
The rookie quarterback from Montreal accounted for all four of McGill's touchdowns, as he threw scoring strikes to Preston Bews, Louis Brouillette and Jeremy Sauvageau, and ran in for another. He finished with 465 passing yards, as he completed 37 of his 48 passes.
The Redmen got off to a quick start, scoring touchdowns on their first two possessions, and taking a 15-0 lead after the first quarter. A pair of Findlay Brown field goals and a safety touch gave the visitors a 23-0 halftime advantage.
After struggling in the first half, Bishop's came out strongly in the second half, as Mathieu Demers (Quebec City, Que.) led the Gaiters on a seven-play, 65-yard drive, capped by an 11-yard pass to Alexandre Bouffard (Sherbrooke, Que.), to get on the board.
The Gaiters comeback continued four minutes later, on a great defensive play. On third-and-goal from the one, Paquette-Perrault attempted to dive into the end zone but was stripped of the ball. The Gaiters' Arnaud Dandin (Paris, France) picked up the loose ball at the 6-yard line, and sprinted 104 yards to the end zone, pulling Bishop's to within nine points at 23-14.

SASKATOON, SASK. – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies reasserted themselves as a playoff contender Friday night with a 40-10 win over the No. 10 ranked UBC Thunderbirds.
The Huskies tallied 494 yards of total offense, including 350 through the air while shutting out the reigning Vanier Cup champions in the second half to improve to 3-3 on the season. With the win in the lone meeting between the two schools, Saskatchewan leap frogs UBC (3-3) in the standings and will hold the tiebreaker, if necessary.
"We put ourselves back in the hunt," said Huskie head coach Brian Towriss. "We still control our own destiny. Full marks to our guys, they played really, really well."
Kyle Siemens led the charge for the Huskies with 346 yards and three touchdowns through the air. Siemens was good on 24 of his 38 passes on the night. Mitch Hillis was Siemens' favourite target in his first game back from injury hauling in 10 passes for 175 yards and a pair of scores. Jarvis James rushed for 66-yards and a pair of touchdowns to help the Huskies get out to an early lead.
"He (Mitch) broke the game wide open," Towriss added about his fourth year receiver Mitch Hills. "His two touchdowns in the third and fourth quarter really broke it open for us, it was great to see."
Saskatchewan got off to a strong start on a cold and blustery night in Saskatoon where winds were gusting over 60 km/h. The Huskies marched the field on their opening drive that was capped off by a Jarvis James one-yard plunge. The Huskies would lead all the way to the finish.
The T-Birds were able to find their rhythm before the first quarter was out, driving the length of the field before settling for a Greg Hutchins 20-yard field goal.

CALGARY – The fifth-ranked University of Calgary Dinos fired from all cylinders from start to finish Friday night, handing the Manitoba Bisons the third-worst loss in program history with a 63-6 triumph at McMahon Stadium.
Led by the return of both Michael Klukas and Austen Hartley to the receiving corps, the Dinos picked up 619 yards in their best offensive outburst of the year. Klukas finished with two catches for 52 yards and a touchdown, playing his first game of the 2016 season, while Hartley returned to the field after missing two games and promptly led the way with eight catches for 180 yards and a touchdown.
The defence, Calgary's strength so far in 2016, got in on the action too, hauling in three interceptions – including a 77-yard return TD by Hunter Turnbull – and limited Manitoba to just 200 offensive yards on the night.
With the victory, the Dinos improve to 5-1 and clinch a playoff spot for the 10th consecutive season.
"We had a great week of practice, everybody was executing well, and we felt really good coming into the game," said Dinos head coach Wayne Harris. "The guys were able to execute and bring their tempo from practice into game action. Anytime you can get the kind of turnovers we did defensively, and anytime the offence can put up those kind of numbers, it's very exciting.
"The coaches put together a great game plan, and the players picked it up and were able to execute it."
Calgary's first interception led to their first touchdown as Brennan Van Nistelrooy picked off Theo Deezar on the seventh play of the game. After a big gain by Hartley, Jimmy Underdahl found Jeshrun Antwi for a 20-yard touchdown, his first of two on the day. The Dinos' second TD also came one play after Hartley picked up a big gain, this time 34 yards, and Bryce Harper ran it in from six yards out for his first of two on the night.

Toronto, ON (October 15, 2016) — Chris Pezzetta ran all over the Lions in the first half, and the remainder of the McMaster Marauders offence took over in the second Saturday.
The veteran running back from Burlington, Ont. had a total of 162 yards on 14 carries and a pair of touchdowns in the opening half, as McMaster built a 34-point lead at the break before ultimately defeating the York Lions 64-2.
Averaging 11.6 yards per carry, Pezzetta's total on the ground was a career single-game high, achieved in just two quarters of play.
Moving to 6-1, McMaster remained tied for first in the OUA standings with just one game remaining. The Marauders will travel to London, Ont. to play the Western Mustangs, one of their fellow 6-1 teams, in the final game of the regular season on October 22, with the opportunity to clinch the top seed and a first-round playoff bye with a win.
Kicker Adam Preocanin of Burlington matched the McMaster single-season record with a pair of field goals to reach 24 on the year, equalling the record set by Tyler Crapigna in 2014. However, Preocanin missed a pair of attempts in the second half that would have given him sole possession of the record, and was blocked on McMaster's final drive of the afternoon, finishing 2-5.
He sits two field goals shy of the OUA and CIS single-season record set by Guelph's Daniel Ferraro in 2014.
With his 31-yard, third-quarter touchdown, receiver Danny Vandervoort of Barrie, Ont. moved into sole possession of third on the CIS career receiving touchdown list with 29, passing his former head coach Stefan Ptaszek in the process.

OTTAWA – Alex Taylor ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns to help the Western Mustangs defeat the Ottawa Gee-Gees 68-17 on Saturday afternoon at Gee-Gees Field.
The win moves Western to 6-1 on the year, and keeps the Mustangs alongside Laurier and McMaster atop the OUA standings. Ottawa moves to 5-2 to put them into a tie with their crosstown rivals in the Carleton Ravens.
Taylor's 160 yards on the ground represent the second highest single game total of the season for the Winnipeg native, and came on 25 carries. Quarterback Chris Merchant was next up on the Mustangs rushing leaderboard, recording 72 yards on the ground on only nine attempts.
Merchant had another strong game through the air as well, throwing for 252 yards and two touchdowns, along with one interception on 17-22 passing. EDMONTON – Rookie kicker Brent Arthur connected a 26-yard field goal with 18 seconds left in regulation time to lift the University of Alberta Golden Bears football team to their first win of the season as they defeated the CIS No.4 ranked Regina Rams 19-18 at Foote Field on Saturday afternoon.
Arthur, who is a transfer from Division 2 NCAA school Quincy University, came into the contest having made two of three field attempts in his first CIS season, with a longest of 26-yards, but the Bright's Grove, Ontario native was on point on Saturday, connecting on all four attempts, including the game winner as well as his CIS career best, a 41-yard attempt that split the uprights with no time on the clock in the second quarter.
Fourth-year receiver Tylor Henry caught Alberta's lone touchdown on the afternoon, reeling in a 14-yard toss from quarterback Ben Kopczynski in the third quarter. Henry finished the game with 90 yards on six receptions which moved him up a pair of all-time lists as he leapt into third place all-time in Golden Bears conference receiving yards, as well as fifth place in Canada West all-time receptions.
Kopczynski himself had an efficient afternoon, completing 11 of 19 passes for 206 yards, while receiver Adam Zajdel was instrumental as well, earning 85 receiving yards on just two catches. Runningback Ed Ilnicki picked up 95 yards along the ground to bump his season total to 605 on the season, second best in Canada West.
Regina, now 4-2 on the season and second place in the Canada West standings, put up good numbers on the Bears, including 537 total offensive yards, but committed four turnovers, all of them fumbles, losing three to the home side. Although Noah Picton completed 22 of 32 passes for 314 yards, he couldn't find any of his receivers in the endzone. Rams runningback Atlee Simon, the conference leading rusher last season, rumbled for 162 yards on 29 carries and picked up Regina's lone TD, a 2-yard plunge in the second quarter.
