DAY 6 RECAP 2025 FISU WINTER WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES
Team Canada Women’s Curling took little time asserting itself as a medal hopeful, opening up Day One of the competition with an undefeated start at the 2025 FISU Winter World University Games.
WOMEN’S CURLING
The University of Alberta foursome of Serena Gray-Withers, Catherine Clifford, Brianna Cullen, and Zoe Cinnamon looked very much like a team with medal aspirations on Day One of the Women’s Curling competition.
They opened with a lopsided 9-1 victory over Poland, before defeating a strong Korea team 7-4, to improve to 2-0. Team Gray-Withers, who represented Canada at the 2023 FISU Winter World University Games in Lake Placid, will play Great Britain and the United States on Friday in round robin action.
MEN’S CURLING
The University of Regina team of Josh Bryden, Adam Bukurak, Carter Williamson, and Ayden Whittmire stayed perfect in Men’s Curling, topping China 6-2 today, improving to 2-0. They will take on Italy and Sweden in round robin play on January 17th at PalaTazzoli in Torino.
MEN’S HOCKEY
Team Canada dominated Sweden with a convincing 8-4 victory to wrap up the round robin at 3-1. The Canadians will head to the quarterfinals on Sunday. Simon Lavigne (Concordia University) opened the scoring for the second night in a row, followed by goals from Conor Frenette and Loris Rafanomezantsoa (both UQTR), making it 3-1 after one period. Canada outshot Sweden 54-19, with eight different players finding the back of the net.
BIATHLON
In the Single Mixed Relay, Anna Perry (University of Calgary) and Liam Simons (UBCO) represented Canada, finishing 10th overall in the event.
SNOWBOARD
Amy McCarthy of Acadia University qualified 2nd in the Women’s Snowboard Slopestyle competition, while U of T’s Jonah Cantelon advanced to the finals in the 8th spot. The two will go for a spot on the podium tomorrow afternoon.
ALPINE SKIING:
The Men’s Alpine Combined saw Aleksas Valadka place 19th and Caeden Carruthers finish 23rd in the Slalom medal event.
