U SPORTS Board of Directors confirmed for 2024-25

U SPORTS is pleased to announce the composition of its 2024-25 Board of Directors and officer positions. 

The U SPORTS Board of Directors comprises nine members: four presidential representatives, one from each region, and four athletic director representatives, once again, one selected from each conference. There is one independent member, while the U SPORTS CEO is an ex-officio board member. 

The Board of Directors maintains authority over and responsibility for the systems and structures employed by U SPORTS to direct and manage its general operations. The Board approves strategies, plans, policies, and procedures that guide U SPORTS and provide direction for management and all Committees. It ensures the organization's financial well-being while overseeing that governance, organizational and staffing structure, and policies lead U SPORTS to pursue its mission, vision, and values successfully.  

The Board also appoints a Chair, Vice-Chair, and Treasurer annually. Dr. Graham Carr continues as Chair of the Board of Directors and Human Resources Committee, Dr. Karen Murphy remains Vice-Chair, and Mr. John Olfert retains the Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee. Dr. Stephen Murphy is Chair of the Governance Committee.  

U SPORTS also announced the appointment of Mr. Ben Matchett (Calgary, Alta.) to the board for 2024-25. Matchett has been synonymous with university sports in Canada for over two decades. Beginning in the events, marketing, and communications department at the University of Calgary, Ben progressed through the U of C until becoming athletic director.  

He has overseen the development and execution of the Crowchild Classic series between the University of Calgary and their cross-town rivals from Mount Royal University, led the rebrand of the Dinos visual identity, and has served on several U SPORTS mission teams for FISU World University Games, including being the Canadian Chef de Mission for the 2023 FISU World University Winter Games in Lake Placid, NY.
