ÉTS becomes U SPORTS’ 58th member university
The École de technologie supérieur (ÉTS) has been accepted as the 58th U SPORTS member during the organization’s annual conference and meeting in Calgary, Alta.
Founded in 1974, ÉTS is a Montreal-based member university of the Université du Québec education network and one of Canada’s leading post-secondary technological innovation institutions. The Piranhas join U SPORTS as a probationary member in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s track and field and women’s volleyball.
As per U SPORTS policies, ÉTS will be a two-year probationary member. This period ensures the university’s commitment to athletics and that the institution conforms to the values and ethics of U SPORTS. A vote for full ÉTS membership will come at the Annual Meeting in June 2026.
“After having concluded a site visit this spring and meetings with ÉTS leadership and athletic department staff, we are ecstatic to confirm the Piranhas will be joining U SPORTS for the 2024-25 season,” said U SPORTS CEO Pierre Arsenault. “ÉTS is one of Canada’s top technological universities and shares many of the same values as U SPORTS. Their approach to innovation, excellence and support of students makes them a perfect fit for U SPORTS membership, and we are pleased to welcome ÉTS to U SPORTS to commemorate the institution’s 50th anniversary. We look forward to watching the Piranhas compete at U SPORTS events for many years to come!”
As an applied engineering university, ÉTS aims to develop Québec’s economy and technology sector. Its alums account for more than 25% of the 11,000 engineers in the province. As a result of its emphasis on applied engineering, research, and partnerships, ÉTS is ranked second among Canadian engineering schools.
“ÉTS is proud to join the ranks of U SPORTS,” said Michel Huneault, Vice-President Academic ÉTS. “It is an important milestone for the development of our sports teams and a clear demonstration of our commitment to Canadian university sports.”
The Piranhas have been a member of the RSEQ university conference since 2001 and are a part of the ÉTS Sports Centre. The program is committed to developing university sports to support the growth of female and male student-athletes to form healthy and balanced leaders of tomorrow.
“Today is a dream come true for the ÉTS Piranhas,” said Danny De Courval, Director of the ÉTS Sports Centre. “We have been building our program over the past decade to join U SPORTS, and today, we can say that ÉTS has joined the big leagues of Canadian university sports!”
