2016 Olympian Yuri Kisil of UBC Thunderbirds is the ArcelorMittal Dofasco U SPORTS male athlete of the week for the period ending February 26, 2017.
Kisil, a second-year arts major from Calgary, earned six gold medals at the national swim meet, as UBC won its second U SPORTS Swimming championship in three years. The Rio Olympian was the fastest in the 50-metre (21.62 seconds), 100-metre (46.94) and 200-metre freestyle (1:44.10) races, and swam a leg in UBC’s 4x100-metre freestyle (3:12.92), 4x200-metre freestyle (3:32.36) and 4x200-metre relay (7:08.50) victories. Kisil set or helped achieve records in four of the events, including a new Canadian mark in 4x200-metre freestyle relay, to take home Men’s Swimmer of the Year honours.
Laval Rouge et Or swimmer Pascal-Hugo Caron-Cantin, Moncton Aigles Bleus track and field athlete Alain Doucet and Queen’s Gaels hockey goaltender Kevin Bailie were the other male nominees.
