ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS athletes of the week (#7): Ottawa’s Patrinos, Alberta’s Barnes honoured
OTTAWA (CIS) – Irene Patrinos, a rugby player from the University of Ottawa, and Ryley Barnes, a volleyball player from the University of Alberta, are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 19, 2014.
OTTAWA (CIS) – Irene Patrinos, a rugby player from the
University of Ottawa, and Ryley Barnes, a volleyball player from
the University of Alberta, are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female
and male athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 19,
2014.
Patrinos, a fourth-year science student from Mississauga, Ont.,
tallied a game-high 18 points to lead the undefeated Gee-Gees (8-0)
to a 38-20 over McGill in Saturday’s RSEQ semifinal played in
Ottawa. The senior fullback scored the first nine points of the
match on penalty goals and was perfect on her first five kicks on
the afternoon. Nationally fifth-ranked Ottawa is now set to host
the RSEQ championship final against No. 8 Concordia (6-2) Saturday
at 4:30 p.m.
StFX hockey and rugby player Jenna Downey, McMaster rugby player
Cindy Nelles and Manitoba hockey player Alanna Sharman were also
nominated for the women’s award.
Barnes, a third-year physical education and recreation student from
St. Paul, Alta., led all players in kills and points in both
contests as the top-ranked Golden Bears (4-0) earned a weekend
sweep on the road against the Saskatchewan Huskies, who were ranked
seventh in the nation going into the two-game series. The 6-foot-6
left side, who finished the doubleheader with a spectacular .449
attack percentage, racked up 12 kills and 14 points in
Friday’s straight-set win and was even better on Saturday
with 17 kills and 18 points in another 3-0 victory. Barnes also
added three service aces and 10 digs on the weekend.
UNB hockey player Matt Boudens, UQAM soccer player Simon-Pierre
Côté-Kougnima and UOIT soccer player Travis Martin
were the other male nominees.
