OTTAWA (CIS) – Soccer players Amanda Boyle from Western University and Armel Dagrou from University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM) are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 7, 2014.
Boyle, a second-year kinesiology major from Vaughan, Ont., exploded for six goals in three contests, including all three game-winners, to help the Mustangs improve to 5-0 in conference play and move to No. 1 in the national rankings. The sophomore striker tallied twice last Wednesday in a 4-0 win against Waterloo and once on Saturday in a 2-0 victory over Laurier, before scoring all three goals on Sunday in a 3-0 shutout against Brock. Boyle currently leads CIS with 10 markers in five league matches.
Soccer players Mary MacDonald from St. Francis Xavier, Laura Veilleux from Sherbrooke and Jenelle Zapski from Saskatchewan were also nominated for the women’s award.
Dagrou, a second-year sociology student from Montreal, scored four goals in two outings, including a hat trick and a game-winner, as the Citadins kicked off their RSEQ schedule with a hard-fought 5-4 loss against nationally sixth-ranked Montreal and a 1-0 shutout victory over UQTR. In Friday night’s season opener, the talented striker hit the back of the net three times but it wasn’t quite enough to lift his team past powerhouse Montreal. However, his goal on Sunday in Trois-Rivières was all the Citadins needed to record their first win of the young campaign.
Soccer players Diego Padilha from UNB, Kilian Elkinson from Toronto and Marcus Johnstone from Alberta were the other male nominees.
