BlackBerry CIS athletes of the week (#6): Saint Mary’s Burgess, StFX’s Hulit honoured

OTTAWA (CIS) – Saint Mary’s soccer player Kelly Burgess and St. Francis Xavier hockey player Chris Hulit are the BlackBerry Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 17, 2010.
 
Burgess, a fourth-year science student from Halifax, scored three of the Huskies’ four goals last weekend in St. John’s as Saint Mary’s (3-4-3) picked up a pair of 2-0 road wins over Memorial to improve their playoff positioning. The prolific striker, who is tied for the AUS lead with six goals in 10 outings, netted the insurance marker in the second half of Saturday’s series-opening victory and accounted for all the scoring on Sunday. With three games remaining in conference play, the Huskies are fifth in the AUS standings, just one point clear of the sixth and final playoff spot.
 
Concordia rugby player Jackie Tittley and soccer players Amanda Ngwafusi of Carleton and Carrie Nash of Manitoba were also nominated for the women’s award.
 
Hulit, a fifth-year business student from Sault Ste Marie, Ont., tallied four goals and six points during the first weekend of the AUS regular season to lead the No. 4-ranked X-Men (2-0) to a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Acadia and a 4-2 defeat of reigning national champion, No. 5 Saint Mary’s. On Friday evening, the senior forward scored a hat trick – including the game-winner with 4:15 remaining in regulation - and added an assist in the season-opening victory over the Axemen. Hulit was back at it on Saturday with a goal and a helper as the X-Men put a damper on the Huskies’ banner-raising night in Halifax.
 
Hockey players Alexandre Picard-Hooper of McGill, Jim Watt of Windsor and Reid Jorgensen of Calgary were the other male nominees.
