Carleton downs Saskatchewan in all-Canadian final to earn FISU America 3x3 hoops three-peat
The Carleton Ravens won their third straight FISU America 3x3 Basketball Championship on Thursday after a 21-15 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies in the final game of the continental tournament in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The all-Canadian final was the latest renewal of a rivalry that has seen the two squads meet in national championship games three times since 2018, including two of the past three years.
In the championship game, Kyana-Jade Poulin (Brossard, Que./Vanier College) led the Ravens with an incredible 15 points, including the winning basket on a driving layup with 1:36 left in the contest.
“It feels so good. We’ve been working hard,” she said in an interview immediately after the game. “Our team back home has been helping us get better. We came here to compete and we’re really happy with ourselves.”
The fourth-year guard and Vanier College alum was named the tournament MVP.
Jacqueline Urban ( Ancaster, Ont./Lincoln Prep) had three for Carleton, with Tyanne Matosas-Adderly (Toronto, Ont./Crestwood Prep) adding two and Catherine Oliver (Sherbrooke, Que./Champlain-Lennoxville) scoring one.
Saskatchewan’s attack was balanced, with Téa Demong (Hinton, Alta./St. Albert Catholic), Maya Flindall (St. Albert, Alta./St. Albert Catholic), and Ella Murphy Wiebe (Saskatoon, Sask./Aden Bowman Collegiate) each scoring four points, while Logan Reider (Saskatoon, Sask./St. Joseph) had three.
Saskatchewan had taken a 5-2 lead in the early stages, but a 7-1 run by the Ravens turned that into a 10-6 deficit, and the Ravens put the game away with a 6-1 run in the late stages to take the game from 13-11 to 19-12.
As Carleton already had qualified for the 2026 University World Cup by virtue of being defending champions, Saskatchewan will receive the automatic bid allocated to FISU America.
Earlier in the day, Carleton had defeated La Matanza National University of Argentina 21-10 in their semifinal, while Saskatchewan downed the University of Chile 21-12.
On the men’s side, the Bishop’s Gaiters closed their week out with the fifth-place game against Harvard (USA). The Gaiters squad of Reggie Jean Seraphin of Ottawa, Yanis Malanda of Montreal, Kyle Maurice of Lennoxville, Que., and Charles Robert of Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que., defeated the Crimson 21-11.
