Montréal Carabins set to take on the Americas
The Université de Montréal Carabins have arrived in Peru and are set to represent Canada in both the men’s and women’s competitions at the 2026 FISU America Soccer Championship, which begins Tuesday in Lima.
The tournament runs from July 21 to Aug. 1 and brings together university teams from across North America, South America and the Caribbean.
Montréal enters the competition after both Carabins teams reached the podium at the 2025 U SPORTS championships.
The women captured the Gladys Bean Memorial Trophy with a 2-1 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds in the championship match in Hamilton, Ont. The men earned bronze in Toronto, defeating the UQTR Patriotes 5-1 in the third-place match.
The women’s tournament features a six-team round robin. Montréal will compete against the University of Trinidad and Tobago, Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción of Chile, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana of Colombia along with the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas and the Universidad Tecnológica del Perú-Lima, both representing the host nation.
The Carabins open against Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción on Wednesday at noon (all times Eastern) They face Universidad Tecnológica del Perú-Lima on Friday at noon, followed by the University of Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Montréal completes the preliminary round against Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas on July 28 at noon and Pontificia Universidad Javeriana on July 30 at noon.
The top two teams will meet in the championship match on Aug. 1 at 2 p.m. The third- and fourth-place teams will play for bronze at noon, while the fifth-place match between the bottom two teams begins at 10 a.m.
Ten teams are entered in the men’s tournament and have been divided into two five-team groups.
Montréal is in Group A with Universidad San Francisco de Quito of Ecuador, University of Washington from the United States, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (Peru) and Universidad Nacional de La Matanza of Argentina.
Group B consists of Universidade Paulista of Brazil, the University of Trinidad and Tobago, Universidad Católica del Maule of Chile, along with Universidad Privada Antenor Orrego-Trujillo and Universidad Nacional Hermilio Valdizán, both from Peru.
The Carabins begin the tournament Tuesday against Universidad San Francisco de Quito at 2 p.m. Montréal plays Washington on Thursday at 2 p.m. before receiving a bye on Saturday.
The Carabins return to action against Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos on July 27 at 4 p.m. and conclude the group stage against Universidad Nacional de La Matanza on July 29 at 2 p.m.
The men’s placement matches will be played July 31. The fifth-place teams from each group meet in the ninth-place match at 8:30 a.m., followed by the seventh-place match at 10:30 a.m. and the fifth-place match at 12:30 p.m. The second-place teams will play for bronze at 2:30 p.m., while the two group winners meet for the championship at 4:30 p.m.
The winners of each tournament will advance to the 2027 FISU University World Cup.
