ArcelorMittal Dofasco U SPORTS athletes of the week (#18): Acadia’s Anderson, UBC’s Morgan honoured

TORONTO (U SPORTS) – Paloma Anderson of the Acadia Axewomen and Conor Morgan from the UBC Thunderbirds are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco U SPORTS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending February 5, 2017.

Anderson, a fourth-year arts student from Phoenix, Arizona recorded a combined 57 points in a weekend sweep of then-ranked No.10 Cape Breton. The veteran guard and former BLG Award nominee for U SPORTS Female Athlete of the Year, scored back-to-back game highs – starting with 32 points in a 96-75 win over the Capers on Friday, followed by another 25 points in the Axewomen’s 78-69 overtime victory Saturday. Anderson, who leads the nation with 23.3 points per game, added six rebounds, eight assists, six steals, and three blocks in the pair of contests

Basketball players Kayla Gordon of the Trinity Western Spartans and Alex Kiss-Rusk from the McGill Martlets, along with Nipissing Lakers hockey goalie Jackie Rochefort were also nominated for the women’s award.

Morgan, a fourth-year kinesiology major from Victoria, B.C. fell just shy of two straight double-doubles as the Thunderbirds picked up consecutive wins over UNBC. The UBC veteran forward played a huge role in Friday’s 123-75 victory against the Timberwolves, scoring 36 points, and a game-high 13 rebounds, to go along with four steals and two blocks. On Saturday, Morgan picked up where he left off, knocking down 20 points while grabbing six rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block as UBC triumphed 109-61. With two games remaining in the regular season, Morgan ranks first in U SPORTS men’s basketball with 24.3 points per game.

Basketball players Devin Johnson of the Toronto Varsity Blues and Kevin Bercy of the StFX X-Men, as well as Laval volleyball player Vicente Ignacio Parraguirre Villalobos were the other male nominees.
